Cover-Up Tattoos
in Derby

Cover-up work is one of the most technical parts of custom tattooing. At Tattoo Creations in Sinfin, Derby, Kev Oakton designs bespoke artwork around your existing ink — so the result looks intentional, not like a patch over an old tattoo.

Covering an old or unwanted tattoo

A good cover-up isn't about hiding an old tattoo under a bigger, darker one. It's about designing new artwork that works with what's already there — the shape, the darkest areas, and how the skin has aged — so the finished piece stands on its own. That takes planning, which is why every cover-up here starts with a proper assessment rather than a quick quote.

Kev works in realism, black and grey, colour, and illustrative styles, and takes on cover-ups and redesigns regularly. Whether it's an old name, a faded piece, or work you've simply outgrown, the aim is a tattoo you're glad to show, not one you're still hiding.

How a cover-up works

01

Assessment

Kev looks at the existing ink — its colour, density, age, and how the skin has healed — to judge what's realistically possible.

02

Design strategy

A bespoke design is planned around the old tattoo, using placement, contrast, and detail to break up and absorb what's underneath.

03

Lightening (if needed)

Where the old ink is too dark to cover cleanly, Kev can advise on lightening options beforehand for a stronger result.

04

The cover-up

Appointment-only sessions apply the new artwork, with written aftercare and ongoing support through healing.

Tattoo lightening before a cover-up

Not every cover-up needs lightening — plenty work in a single design. But when the original is very dark, very dense, or has heavy black outlines, fading it first opens up far more design freedom and a cleaner finish. That's usually done as a few sessions at a laser clinic, with healing time between them.

During your consultation, Kev will give you an honest view: whether lightening is worth it for your tattoo, roughly how much fading would help, and how it fits into the overall plan. No unnecessary sessions, no overselling.

Frequently asked questions

Can any tattoo be covered up? +

Most can, but it depends on the size, age, colour, and how dark the existing tattoo is. Darker, denser ink needs a bolder cover design or some lightening first. The honest answer for your specific tattoo comes from a consultation, where Kev can assess the ink and the skin.

Do I need tattoo lightening before a cover-up? +

Not always. Many cover-ups work without it. But where the old tattoo is too dark or dense to cover cleanly, lightening it beforehand — usually a few laser sessions at a specialist clinic — can give a much better result and more design freedom. Kev will tell you honestly whether it's worth it for your piece.

Will the cover-up be bigger than the original tattoo? +

Usually a little, yes. A cover-up generally needs some extra room around the old design to break up its shape and hide the darkest areas, so the new piece is often slightly larger. How much depends on what's underneath.

What can a cover-up look like? +

The goal is a tattoo that looks intentional from day one, not a patch over an old mistake. Working in realism, black and grey, colour, and illustrative styles, Kev designs the new piece around the existing ink so it reads as its own artwork.

How do I book a cover-up consultation in Derby? +

Submit the consultation form or email kev@tattoocreations.co.uk with clear photos of the existing tattoo, plus your ideas for the cover. From there Kev advises on what's possible, whether lightening is needed, and the likely design direction.
